Six Common Questions About Sterling Silver Jewelry

Sterling silver jewelry has been a popular commodity for thousands of years. One of the obvious reasons is the affordability over other precious metals gold and platinum. The large variety of sterling silver jewelry requires certain knowledge in order to choose the right piece and also keep it in good condition as long as possible. The followings are the most common questions concerning sterling silver jewelry.

How do I clean sterling silver jewelry?

It depends. Usually, it is sufficient to use a jewelry cloth (with two layers of cloths in different colors) that you can get from a jewelry accessory store. Don't use any hard object to clean sterling silver jewelry; even paper towel could scratch the surface. You should rub any dirt off using a jewelry cloth, not fingernails. Silver-dip is another commonly used sterling silver jewelry cleaner, which can also be obtained from jewelry store. The entire silver jewelry is immerged in the solution for half a minute to a minute and then rinsed with water. Make sure the silver jewelry is not plated with any other metal before using the silver-dip or the plating will be damaged.

Where do I store sterling silver jewelry?
It is very important to store sterling silver jewelry properly when it is not used. The ideal place to store sterling silver jewelry is cool and away from sunlight. Heat and light will turn a silver jewelry yellow and cause it to tarnish quickly. Even indoor light source like florescent lights or light bulbs turn the color of silver jewelry over time. If you expect not to wear a certain piece for a long time, put it in a air-tight bag and store it in a drawer.

What types of silver jewelry plating are there?
Unlike gold and platinum, however, pure silver is rather unstable and oxides rather quickly. Therefore, silver jewelry is usually plated with another metal to protect it from tarnishing. There are two kinds of plating for silver jewelry: nickel and rhodium plating. Nickel plating has a more whitish look and rhodium plating has a darker look. Rhodium is used to plate white gold and platinum jewelry and is much more expensive than nickel, and it give better protection to the silver underneath. On the other hand, some silver jewelry is not plated. For instance, high polished sterling silver jewelry does not have any plating and the surface is polished by machine to render shininess. Also, 'oxidized silver' jewelry is oxidized on purpose to give a dark antique look and is not plated with any other metals.

How do I know the purity of my silver jewelry?
The purity of sterling silver refers to 92.5% of silver in the alloy. In order to confirm the purity, the metal itself has to be sent to a laboratory to be tested. However, most of the sterling silver jewelry produced nowadays has a '925' stamp to indicate the authenticity of the jewelry. Although there are cases where stamps are forged and the metal is either not silver or the purity is not as stated, they are very rare.

How about engraving and resizing?
Engraving and resizing of sterling silver rings is rather simple due to the ductility and relatively low melting point. However, make sure your jeweler understands the process of refinishing the ring and that they possess the necessary equipment to do so. Not all jewelers have the equipment to recoat the rhodium plating after cutting and welding the ring. Also, rings set with stones are sometimes not resizable because resizing might cause the stones to pop out. Such settings include channel and invisible settings.

Can I wear sterling silver jewelry if I am allergic to nickel?
Yes, just make sure the jewelry is pure sterling silver, not plated with nickel. Even Rhodium plated sterling silver jewelry sometimes contains a nickel layer between the silver and the rhodium to act as an adhesive. Hence, buy only high polished sterling silver jewelry if you are allergic to nickel.

Summer Care for Your Diamond

Caring for your diamond during the summer months will ensure that it's brilliance shines for years to come. And while summer activities may be great for all who participate, diamonds can be sensitive to summer's effects. This article gives tips to help take care of your diamond this summer.

The old saying that "diamonds are forever" may sound clich, but is founded in absolute truth. Diamonds offer a beauty, brilliance, and durability that is second to no other natural stone on Earth.

Unfortunately due to the diamond's durability, most forget that the utmost care and attention is still required to keep these precious gems looking showroom sharp. When caring for a diamond, the summer months can be the hardest on the stone and the setting. This summer, before the fun begins, set a little time aside to keep your precious stone in top condition.

diamond birthstone
Diamonds are the hardest stone on Earth, however the settings a diamond needs in order to be worn are not quite as durable. The gold, silver, platinum and palladium used to house your stone can show very real signs of wear thanks to summer's unique events and activities. Here are a few tips to care for your diamond this summer.

1.Avoid salt water. While the chlorine present in swimming pools can harm the mounting of a diamond piece, salt water can harm the diamond itself. The erosive properties of salt water can act like sandpaper on the surface of the diamond causing the stone to appear less vibrant and brilliant. When swimming in ocean water or other forms of salt water, removal of the diamond piece is recommended. If your diamond has been buffed by the salt, take it to a jeweler for a cleaning. The industrial buffers used to shine diamonds can return the brilliance to your stone.

2.Reduce the amount of oils and grease. The summer is known for sunscreens, lotions, and bug sprays which contribute to a more enjoyable summer for the wearer. However, these items can make a diamond appear dull and lifeless as they build on thick layers of grime. In addition to the natural oils and sweat produced by our bodies, those added oils that we apply should be cleaned on a regular basis during the summer months. A daily swish of your diamond in warm water with a soft cleaning solution is enough to keep your diamond sparkling.

3.Expeditions are not for diamonds. The hardest stone in the world does have the ability to break. For those rough and tough family outings like hiking, rock climbing and camping, leaving the diamond wedding rings, engagement rings, and other loose diamond jewelry at home is a good idea for both diamond and the wearer. Not only can rough activity cause a diamond to chip, but the mounting can be disfigured causing diamond to fall out during the activity. Another risk is ring avulsion which occurs when a ring is caught and ripped from the finger of the wearer. Outdoor activities are best completed with jewelry-free hands, necks and arms.

Your diamond is a beautiful treasure that is meant to last a lifetime. However, with the amount of chemicals (both manmade and natural) and the "extremeness" of today's physical activities, the diamond needs a little extra care in order to stay as brilliant as it was on the day of purchase. This summer, take a few extra moments to care for your diamond to ensure that its timeless beauty can be seen year round.

The Ring - Step Back In History

The popularity of rings increased during the medieval period. People wore rings no matter if they were rich or poor. The most used materials in the making of rings are copper, iron, gold and silver. The class of the person was usually identified by the material the ring was made of.

Faceted jewels began to appear in rings around the 14th century. Some cultures have rings that are usually associated with them. Native Americans are associated with silver and turquoise jewelry. The Greek symbol of the fish, called the Icthus was used by Early Christians. The Irish Claddagh has an interesting story attached to it.

Richard Joyce along with the crew on a fishing boat from the village of Claddagh, Ireland, was captured the same week he was supposed to be married. Goldsmithing was Richard Joyce's trade while he was enslaved. While he was captured, neither married. Richard Joyce made a ring for his beloved that had two hands holding a heart for love and a crown for loyalty.

Joyce escaped from his captors and returned to Claddagh where he was excited to see his love again and know she had never married. She never gave up hope of his return to her. He gave her the ring that is known as the Claddagh ring. Wearing the Claddagh on your right hand, crown inward means that you are letting people know that you are single.

The person who wears the Claddagh on the right hand with the crown outward is in a committed relationship. Wearing the Claddagh with the crown outward on your left hand says Let our love and friendship reign forever, never to be separated. There are many reasons for wearing rings, one is adornment. Rewards for a job well done include rings such as the one given after the Super Bowl victory.

Rings such as engagement rings and wedding rings symbolize commitment. Women Religious wear rings to show their commitment to God. You can use almost any material to make rings now. Plastic, silver, copper, gold or even wood can be use to make them. Ceramic materials can be used as well.

Rings can be very simple or of something as intricate as filigree. Rings can be plain and simple or be adorned with jewels and/or gemstones, as is the case of birthstone rings. There is a birthstone for each month with its own meaning.

Below you will find a list.

The Garnet is January's stone the gem of faith and truth; it is believed to stop bleeding, to cure sickness of the blood and infections and it is said to protect from poisons. It is believed that February's birthstone the Amethyst helps soldiers in battle, hunters to catch prey, control evil thoughts and help the owner have success in business. In order to prevent seasickness, keep them safe, and gain courage and foresight, sailors use the Aquamarine, the stone for March.

The Diamond is April's stone and is the symbol of strength, courage and invincibility. The diamond is the greatest gift of love. In 1477 Archduke Maximillian of Austria gave a diamond to Mary of Burgundy which started the tradition of engagement rings. The Emerald is the birthstone for May and believed to sharpen the eyesight and mind of the wearer.

As protection against the hazards of long trips travelers used Emeralds. The owner of the Emerald is said to be given the power to predict the future because of its green color. The pearl is the birthstone of June and fresh water pearls are said to give the power of protection, luck, and love.

Eternity Rings Signify Love Forevermore

Ring buying and gift giving trends continue to change, as people feel free to discover new ways to express their love to the person or people in their lives. For that special soul mate, an eternity ring has become an important outward demonstration signifying love, commitment, honor, and respect.

Yet, committed couples aren't the only ones buying eternity rings, which are also known as anniversary rings, infinity rings, or special occasion rings. Women, who do most of the jewelry buying, are selecting these types of rings for themselves whether they are in a relationship or not. Not waiting for that special someone to come along or perhaps content where they are in life, many women value eternity rings for their style, worth, and long term value. These types of rings also make for an excellent family heirloom to be passed down to children and grandchildren.

white gold eternity rings
Eternity rings are available as either half eternity or as full eternity rings. With a half eternity ring larger stones are usually featured, circling half way around the ring; while with a full eternity ring smaller stones are preferred with stones fully circling the ring. Some designers have successfully created full eternity rings consisting of larger stones, rings which still look attractive and offer a good fit.

Though diamonds are the overwhelming stone choice, sapphires, rubies, and emeralds are also favored and are often paired with diamonds in an alternating pattern circling the ring. Some couples prefer to include their respective birthstones while others may choose a different gemstone of significance to them.

With eternity rings, setting styles are limited to channel or pave with both settings offering an elegant look. A channel cut setting is preferred by some as they securely hold the gems in place and are easiest to build. Comparably sized settings are usually priced the same too.

Of course, if you are married and already wear an engagement ring and a wedding band, what is the proper way to wear an eternity ring?

Though there aren't any hard and fast rules on how to wear an eternity ring, many women choose to wear their rings with either their engagement ring or wedding, but not both. For some women they prefer to wear all three rings but they'll move their wedding band to their right hand ring finger. If all three rings feature the same metals (i.e., yellow gold, white gold, platinum, or silver) and the rings complement each other, then wearing three rings on one finger is an acceptable practice too.

Again, today's ring wearers choose the look that is right for them as traditional customs are considered to be of secondary importance.

Eternity rings, no matter what they are called, offer a conspicuous design not found on other rings. Therefore, it is no wonder that many women are choosing these rings for themselves, prizing a look once reserved solely for married couples.

Garnet is January's Birthstone

If you're still young enough to remember your birthday, you probably also remember the special birthstone assigned to it. But at your age, we bet you don't really know the SIGNIFICANCE of your birthstone and what power the ancients felt would be bestowed about you by wearing it.

January's birthstone: Garnet

Garnet Powers: Facilitates night vision, ensures success

Alternative Birthstone: Emerald

Garnet is the birthstone for the month of January and the traditional anniversary gemstone for the second year of marriage. Archaeologists have found primitive garnet jewelry among the graves of lake dwellers which dates the use of this popular gemstone to the Bronze age. Today they are mined in Brazil, India, Madagascar, India, Siberia, Africa, Sri Lanka, and the United States.

Not all garnets are of gem quality. "Raw" garnets make a very effective abrasive and used commercially for grinding and polishing. Believe it or not, garnet-coated sandpaper is popular for industrial use.

Color Me Beautiful

silver charm rings Garnets are extremely diverse and offer enough variety in appearance (and color) to suit every taste. Although you may think of garnet as a red gem, the truth is that the garnet family of gemstones comes in a broad spectrum of colors, except blue.

Garnets of muted yellows, vibrant oranges, rosy pinks, lime greens, and violets are all part this gemstone's rainbow of hues. The diversity is due to unique combinations of elements within each particular gem, such as iron, calcium, and manganese.

What's In A Name?

Look at the seeds of a pomegranate and you'll immediately understand how the word "garnet" was derived from the Latin word "granatus," meaning "grain" or "seed." Garnet earned its name because of its close resemblance to the succulent red pomegranate seed. But don't bite into a garnet! Like a diamond, a garnet is strong. It has a Moh's scale hardness 6.5 to 7.5...definitely not tooth-friendly.

A Greek myth tells the story of Peresphone, the young goddess of sunshine, who was abducted by Hades, god of the underworld. The devil eventually released her, but not before he offered her some pomegranate seeds, which guaranteed her return to him. Thus garnets have come to represent fidelity and commitment.

Rich Traditions

Legends, myths, and traditions abound when it comes to garnets. It is believed to be one of the 12 gemstones in Aaron's breastplate in the Hebrew tradition while Christians consider it is symbolic of Christ's sacrifice and the blood of their savior. Many faiths claim that Noah hung a large red garnet in the ark for illumination. In the Koran, garnets are believed to illuminate the Fourth Heaven of the Moslems. On a more earthly plane, Egyptians believed that garnets protected them from snakebite and was an antidote to food poisoning.

A gift of garnet is thought to be symbolic of love and the desire for a loved one's safe travel and speedy homecoming. It is January's birthstone, but far from being only a winter gem, the garnet, with its brilliance and multitude of colors, is truly one for any season.
